about
'Alice and the Crystal Ball' is a teaser track from forthcoming Weaver Birds album Short Stories, due to be released on 17 December 2022.
Short Stories spins tales of family history. Each song tells the story of a distant relative of Weaver Birds Candi Godbold or Adam Gardner.
'Alice and the Crystal Ball' is about Alice Cooper (1914-2003). Alice lived in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. She is Candi’s Great-Aunt. Alice was a spiritualist and entertained family and friends with palm and tea leaf readings. She also had a crystal ball, which she used to tell fortunes. The song recalls the regular visits to Alice’s home undertaken by Candi’s mother Maureen Hollingsworth and her five siblings. She remembers a charitable, warm and caring woman who was a source of support to her mother, Isabella Hollingsworth, in times of hardship.
lyrics
Alice and your crystal ball
On wintry days you invite us all
Reading leaves in china cups
Cupboards full
You filled us up
Alice, we love you so
Warmth of your home and your soul
When will we see you near?
Please consult that misty sphere
Oh brothers and sisters
Won’t you come and see
Alice has a message for thee
Love, success and happiness
A gift for all the family
Alice, we loved you so
And your kind heart it reached us all
And as these wintry days draw on
Your guiding us with your crystal ball
